I Will Cancel Teacher Licensure Examination When I Become President – John Mahama

Former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, who is also the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that he will cancel the teacher licensure examination when elected as president.

According to John Mahama, the current teacher licensure examination is useless. He added that there were no proper planning processes before its implementation.

John Mahama made these revelations during a party campaign in the Bono Region.

John Mahama questioned the necessity for an additional test after completing College of Education or university. He pledged to address the issue if elected, proposing to eliminate the current examination and implement measures to ensure professionalism among graduates.

About Teacher Licensure Examination

The National Teaching Council in Ghana is the only institution in the country mandated to regulate the teaching profession in Ghana. They are responsible for the teacher licensure examination. The test all persons who wish to teachers in the country.

Purpose Of Teacher Licensure examination

As you already know, the main purpose of the exams is to enable qualified teachers (teachers who have passed through teacher training colleges or universities) acquire a professional licence. This license will prepare them to meet the demands of the National Teachers’ Standards of possessing the minimum knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to deliver effectively in schools. Without the license, teachers in Ghana are not well recognized.

The teacher licensure was introduced Five years ago. The first session of the exams was called the Traditional License exams. Here, all perspective teachers write three same papers. The papers include, Essential Skills(Curriculum Studies), Numeracy (Mathematics) and Literacy (English)

Currently, the Council is embarking on reform to introduce Subject-Based Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (SBGTLE) this year. This is where teachers will write papers or exams based on the subject area studied.

Form of the Examination

Here, all candidates shall write three papers which comprise the

General Professional Knowledge paper.

This paper comprises numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills contents.

Grade-level Specialism Pedagogy paper.

The pedagogies are differentiated by levels of specialisation. That is, Early Grade or Early Childhood, Primary and JHS, SHS/SHTS and Technical Vocational Schools.

Multiple Subjects Content or Single Subject Content Knowledge (subject specialism).

Multiple Subjects Content: prospective teachers who are trained for Early Grade/Early Childhood or Primary levels will write Multiple Subjects Content Paper for their respective levels since they will teach all subjects in their respective classes.

Single Subject Specialism: prospective teachers who are trained for junior high, senior high or TVET will write one paper in their areas of specialisation.

Eligibility for the Licensure Examination.

In order to qualify for this examination, you should have a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in any public university in the country.
Also, candidates with foreign degrees shall provide a certificate evaluation report from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to prove their eligibility.

Indexing Process

This is a new process added to the shtem. Here, a prospective candidate shall be indexed before registering for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.
An indexing fee is Fifty Ghana Cedis (GH⍧50.00.
This is where you link your college’s index number with that of your licensure form.

After successful payment, you will receive a message on your phone which contains your name, indexing number and further instructions. You can visit https://indexing.ntc.gov.gh to verify your details by logging in with your indexing number received on your phone via sms.

Registration Process

Check your status on the NTC exam portal (exams.ntc.gov.gh) to determine whether your data have been uploaded onto the portal by your training institution before you start the registration process.
Candidates shall pay four hundred and fifty Ghana Cedis (GH⍧450.00) for three papers.

Enter your e-voucher Serial number and Pin
Fill in all the fields and remember to upload your passport-size photograph.
