Over 20 pupils escape death as school building collapses in the Central Region

More than 20 students from a school in Assin Zamboree, Central Region, escape death when their school building fell down during heavy rain. This happened on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 9 a.m. while they were in class.

The boss of the School Committee, Jacob Tetteh Agbeko, said the building was in bad shape. When the teachers saw it was dangerous, they told the students to leave the room fast. Right after they left, the building fell down, and their stuff got stuck inside.

Now, because of this, the teachers have to put the affected students with other classes, which makes it hard for everyone to learn. They really need help from the government and other groups.

Some parents want the government to finish building a 6-classroom block they started in 2013 but never finished. They’re scared because the old building, left to rot in the forest, now has snakes and other dangerous animals, so it’s not safe for the students.

Lots of parents took their kids out of the school because they think it’s too dangerous. Instead of going to school, some kids are helping their families farm because the school isn’t safe.

The local leader, Thomas Yogarim, told the National Disaster Management Organization about the problem and is waiting for them to come and help. They’ve asked the District Assembly for help many times, but nothing’s been done yet.

In Ghana, many kids at basic schools face dangers every day because the schools aren’t safe. These risks, like snakes and buildings falling down, put the kids’ safety at risk and make it hard for them to learn properly.

One big problem is snakes being around the school. Because the schools aren’t looked after well, they become homes for snakes. Kids are always worried about running into snakes, which makes it tough for them to focus on studying.

Also, when it rains a lot, the schools flood, especially because they’re not built well. This makes it hard for kids and teachers to go to school and can make them sick too.

The worst thing is when school buildings fall down. Because they’re not taken care of, many school buildings in Ghana are old and not safe. When they collapse, kids and teachers can get hurt or even die. This stops kids from learning, which isn’t good.

To fix these problems, the government and communities need to work together. They need to spend money to fix and build safe schools. They also need to make plans to keep snakes away and stop flooding. Communities need to speak up to make sure kids have safe places to learn. Only then can kids in Ghana have schools that are safe and good for learning.
