In response to the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a significant adjustment to the vacation dates for final-year students in single-track Senior High Schools (SHSs).
Initially, the vacation date for SHS3 students in single-track schools was set for March 5, 2024, as outlined in the GES’s initial calendar release. However, in consideration of the need to adequately prepare these students for their impending WASSCE, the GES has extended their stay in school until March 28, 2024.
Beginning their vacation on March 29, 2024, students will benefit from nearly two additional weeks on campus. This extension provides them with valuable time to engage in comprehensive revision exercises, review coursework, and ensure thorough preparation for the upcoming examination.
While this adjustment may pose logistical challenges for teachers who had previously planned activities based on the original calendar, the decision aims to minimize disruptions and optimize academic readiness. Notably, the timing of the Easter celebrations, commencing on March 29, appears to have influenced the revised schedule.
Furthermore, extending the holiday period until March 28 ensures that students will not need to return home only to come back to campus shortly thereafter for the Easter holidays.
Following their departure on March 28, 2024, final-year students in single-track SHSs will resume academic activities on April 17, 2024, to continue their preparations for the examination.
It is essential to emphasize that these adjustments solely apply to final-year students in single-track schools. There will be no changes to the vacation dates for students in Forms 1 and 2, who will adhere to the original academic schedule provided to them.
Accordingly, Form 2 students will still proceed on holiday on March 5, 2024, and return to school on May 2, 2024. Similarly, Form 1 students will commence their holiday on March 15, 2024, and resume school on May 2, 2024, as previously scheduled.
