Currently, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has undergone significant changes, as announced by the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ministry of Education, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

OLD BECE SUBJECTS

Previously, candidates were tested on subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, ICT, French, Ghanaian Language, and Basic Design Technology.

Now, three new subjects have been introduced: Arabic, Creative Arts and Design, and Career Technology. These changes were officially released in the list of approved subjects for the 2024 BECE.

Mandatory subjects now include English Language, Mathematics, General Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Career Technology, and Creative Arts and Design. Ghanaian languages are elective, while French, Arabic, and Computing are optional.

Regional Directors of Education have been tasked with overseeing the registration process to ensure compliance with the approved subjects.

Candidates must now write a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects. The eight mandatory subjects are English Language, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education (RME), Mathematics, Science, Career Technology, Creative Arts and Design, and Ghanaian Language. Additionally, schools may choose to include Computing, French, or Arabic as optional subjects.

WHEN IS THE 2024 BECE?

The 2024 BECE is scheduled to take place from Monday, 8th July, 2024, to Monday 15th July, 2024.

The BECE serves as a crucial assessment for students completing their basic education, determining their placement into senior high schools and other educational pathways.
